ParlorBot is our contribution to the family of backgammon-playing robots on FIBS. In a recent development it is also the software behind the FIBS robots mgnu_advanced, mgnu_expert, mgnu_expertII and mgnu_WClass (see for more about those).

Internally, ParlorBot is a textbook example of Perl as a "glue" language. It runs GNU Backgammon (gnubg) as a separate process, communicating with it and with FIBS concurrently, dealing with various idiosyncrasies of both, and adding some elements of its own personality.

Gnubg is a remarkable piece of open source software and is available with an attractive graphical interface. If you have not yet tried it, you owe it to yourself to do so!

In addition, ParlorBot runs an Alicebot to offer live chat while you play. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes interesting and often stupid, the bot will always have a reply to whatever you or the watchers wish to say. Use the "kibitz" command (or "To all at table") to talk.
